Advantages of Labor Support

Wednesday, August 28th, 2013

“Women supporting other women through labor is an ageless tradition common to all cultures”

I wanted to post some information on the benefits of having labor support when the big day arrives !  A knowledgable woman there with you both – because don’t forget dad is expecting a baby too –  the emotional support, practical suggestions for working with contractions and pain are some of the many benefits of having someone in your court for the duration – it is worth its weight in gold.

Nurses are in and out of the labor room checking your stats and progress, as their work shifts end a new nurse arrives making it hard to form a connection with one person.

I was lucky enough to have my husband, dear friend and a midwife as we went into the hospital with the goal of a successful VBAC (Vaginal Birth After C-section).

The never-ending support for myself and husband from both Lauren and Nancy enabled our sons birth to go  smoothly without any hitches, and exactly 12 hours after my water broke he arrived safely into the world, un-medicated.

It was the hardest thing I have ever done and many times I doubted my ability to breathe through those intense contractions and focus on the goal!  But both women were there talking me through those doubtful moments with the holding of a hand or a cold glass of water.

Having already had a c-section  I knew that if I went down the road of chemical inductions and epidurals it probably would have lead to another c-section.

ALACE – The Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educators is a non-profit, international organization dedicated to supporting woman-centered childbirth – they recently published these amazing facts;

Controlled trials involving over 1000 women demonstrate that the presence of a Labor Assistant results in:

  • 50% decrease in cesarean sections
  • 25%decrease in length of labor
  • 30% decrease in the use of forceps
  • 40% decrease in the use of oxytocin
  • 60% decrease in the use of epidurals
  • 30% decrease in use of pain medications (narcotics)

Quality Vitamin C

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

The 2 whole foods that I  took daily to increase the chances of naturally becoming pregnant in my 40’s were Cod liver oil, (mentioned in an earlier post) and Camu Camu.  Once pregnant I continued to take them throughout both pregnancies and beyond.

Camu Camu is a fruit that grows in the Amazon rain forest, rich in Vitamin C, bioflavanoids and a combination of phytonutrients unique only to the camu camu fruit.

As word spreads with any new product, other less quality ones reach the market and results are not as dramatic.

I do not gain anything from promoting these products but I do want to stress that the quality of them really does make a difference.

I purchase the light powder as it is easier to digest with not having any of the skin blended with it.

As an Massage Therapist I qualified to purchase at wholesale, they have a 5lb min to order this way but it is the most cost effective –

I mix some of the powder daily with water and some stevia for sweetness and that is my morning cocktail !  My children also drink it calling it their lemonade as it does have a pleasant citrus taste to it.  I especially make a point of giving it to them in the cold winter months to help keep colds and germs at bay – it is a great overall tonic for the whole family.

Oil of the month – Lavendar

Wednesday, July 24th, 2013

Lavendar is a universal oil that has traditionally been know to balance the body and to work wherever there is a need.  If in doubt, use Lavendar. Its a wonderful calming oil and like peppermint is one I usually use on most clients.

Great for headaches when used is specific spots on the body.  Gently eliminates a  headache that a client may come in with in 99.9% of cases!

Safe to use during pregancy, may help calm nerves or emotions for mom – to -be, and help with sleep disturbances.

EXTRACTION METHOD/ORIGIN   –  Steam distilled from flowering tip – France, Idaho, Utah.

PROPERTIES ; Analgesic, Anti-coagulant, anti-depressant, anti-fungal, sedative, skin regenerative, ant-inflammatory.

One of my fellow therapists mentioned that she puts a drop of lavendar in her mascara bottle to thin it out and get more shine from eye lashes.

I do not use mascara so cannot say either way , if you do  give it a try !

Aside from always having a bottle at the office I also do at home.   Using it neat on cuts, burns and scrapes, it can help to dissinfect a sore area, and speed the healing process on burns.  Also great for stopping bleeding on major cuts – I cut my thumb badly headed straight for Lavendar and was amazed at how instantly the throbbing and bleeding stopped – I went on to have 7 stitches and did not need to take any of the pain killers as I just applied Lavendar every time it started throbbing.

NOTE:  Lavendar oil is one of the oils that is adultarated the most often with a cheaper hybrid called lavendin – it smells just like lavendar and is hard to tell apart with smell alone.    The chemical constituant of Lavendin is very different though – I would not advise putting Lavendar oil directly on a cut or burn unless you KNOW it is pure Lavendar oil – otherwise it will burn.

EFA’s for fertility & pregnancy

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013
Many folks have asked me what I did that I thought helped my ability to naturally get pregnant and sustain 2 healthy pregnancies at the age of 43 and 47.There are several whole foods that I supplemented with, but the one that I feel helped the most was a good quality cod liver oil.  Sally Fallon author of Wise Traditions (  talks extensively about the need for supplementing with quality fat soluble A & D for fertility (esp. for older women trying to become pregnant) healthy pregnancies and of course healthy babies !  I started following her advice for diet many years ago, cut out refined sugar, white flour, prepared foods, canola oil and basically cooked from scratch. Most people cringe at the thought of cod liver oil but the company below is the only one in the country who are now preparing fermented, high vitamin cod liver oil – and guess what it tastes pretty OK !  I recommend the Blue Ice, emulsified Licorice flavor – I just put half a teasp or so in my mouth and wash it down with either water or milk (raw of course !) and I promise there is no yucky aftertaste or fishy burb back.

They can be found here and below is a snipet from their website.  You can get lost in a wealth of wonderful information there so be prepared !

Welcome to Green Pasture Products
We are a family owned business started by Dave and Barb Wetzel in 2000.  Our business focus is to provide high-quality sacred-food oils just as they were made prior to the industrialized food and farming revolution.

High-Vitamin Butter Oil is our foundation product that all our work has blossomed through. Dr. Weston Price discovered High-Vitamin Butter Oil back in the 1930’s but the pinnacle of his discovery was when he combined Cod Liver Oil with High-Vitamin Butter Oil.

Green Pasture Featured in Nebraska FarmerToday we produce the High-Vitamin Butter Oil, and we ferment the historically sacred cod and skate liver oils. Fermenting the livers of fish to extract the oil is an old world practice that may go back as far as biblical times. During the 1850s was the beginning of the industrial food revolution and the first time cod liver oil manufacturing changed from it’s historical sacred roots to an industrialized food.

We’ve turned back the clock and restored these sacred foods to their roots. We Are proud to offer these historical sacred foods prepared with the same great care and concern for our generational health just as our ancestors.

Dr. Price traveled the world studying the traditional diets of many cultures. In every culture he discovered sacred foods that were carefully collected and prepared to ensure the strong mind, body, and spirit of its people.
